Registan Square…the most iconic sight of Uzbekis

Registan Square…the most iconic sight of Uzbekistan and the spark that had me wanderlusting to come to this beautiful country in the first place…

All main roads lead to Registan, the heart of the Silk Road: framed by three stunning Madrassas.

🗺️Ulug Beg - to the left, the oldest in Samarkand. Ulug Beg was an astronomer and
a lecturer and this Madrasa was once one of the best universities in the Muslim World. The details on the archways, inner arches are beautiful.

🗺️Tilya-Kori Madrassa is the middle one. This madrasa has a 2-storied main façade, a courtyard surrounded by dormitory rooms and a mosque in the western section of the courtyard.

The interior walls of the mosque are gilded – an ode to its name, Tilya Kori, meaning “gilded” in Persian.

🗺️Sher-Dor Madrassa is the third one, on the right, named after the image on the portal of two tigers carrying a sun on their backs. These images are interesting as it is prohibited in Islam to have images of any living
beings on any religious building. Heavily influenced by Persian architecture.

Next on our journey through Samarkand are the Bibi

Next on our journey through Samarkand are the Bibi Khanym Mosque and citadel and the Hazrt Khizir Mosque.

🗺️Bibi Khanym is one of the most important monuments of Samarkand and named after the wife of Amir Timur, built by him, for her. He wanted this to be the biggest mosque in the Muslim world but didn’t manage to complete its construction. Some say it was built by Bibi Khanym for her husband but wasn’t finished because the architect was killed.

Whatever the story, this mosque has some of the most beautiful architecture in Uzbekistan and the domes are striking.

This isn’t a functional mosque as the inside is completely dilapidated and is being restored but the complex is one that is beautiful to gander around in.

🗺️ Hazrt Khizir is one of the oldest mosques in the world - the outer balcony and pillars have been retained - a brief glimpse into the history of this historic place of worship along the Silk Road

Delving deeper into the world of blue tiles…setting Footsteps in Shah-i-Zinda…eye candy for colourful mosaics and blue domes…

There is something a little
magical and mysterious about this particular complex….rows of tombs and mausoleums grouped along a narrow avenue, bathed in a sea of blue, lending a serene and peaceful ambience to the whole ensemble.

The next stop on the Silk Road is the beautiful tiled city of Samarkand, one that’s been on my wanderlustlist for many years now…and it has honestly surpassed expectations!

This really is the city of blue domes and colourful majolica tiles, adorning monuments in hues of blue and pastel colours….and to say I’ve been blown away is an understatement…

📍Gur-I-Amir Mausoleum: the resting place of Amir Timur, the Amir of the Timurid Empire and considered a national hero in Uzbekistan.

The outside is adorned in beautiful blue majolica tiles, topped with a turquoise ribbed dome. His mausoleum is adorned in onyx and gold and is beautiful: both during the day and at night. It is one of the most peaceful places
to visit in Samarkand.

Literally found a treasure trove!

The subway stations of Tashkent’s metro are works of art and destinations in themselves - I have never come across such beautiful stations, clean, efficient and visually pleasing!

Each station is dedicated to a theme celebrating Uzbekistan’s heritage.

Plus super cheap: riding to all the stations we wanted to see cost $0.16 - that’s right, literally cents for what was an incredible experience!

📍 Alisher Navoy Station - dedicated to the Uzbek Poet and linguist. The ceilings look like the cupola of a mosque…and are stunning!

The only blues I’m seeing this Monday are the blues of the majolica and turquoise tiles of the silk route cities!

📍Khazrati Imam Ensemble, Tashkent

This is a collection of mosques, mausoleums and madrasas at the heart of the old city.

Here’s three things to see while exploring the complex, also known as Hazrat Imam or Host Imam, in Tashkent:

🗺️Visit the Muyi Mubarak Library to see one of the oldest Qurans from the Seventh century.

🗺️Look at the tiled pillars of the Barak Khan Madrasah - what were once classrooms are now souvenir shops.

🗺️ Visit the Tilla Sheikh Mosque and marvel at the decor on the dome.

You can easily spend an hour ambling around here before making your way to nearby monuments.
