When you are “Venice-d out”, if there is such a thing, then take a couple of hours out to explore a different side and hop across to some of the equally pretty but less explored islands of Murano and Burano. You all know I can be pretty verbose at the best of times. In complete un-Harpreet’s Wanderlustlike fashion, for once, I am going to let these breathtaking postcards of these islands do all the talking! Welcome to my photo diary of Murano and Burano folks!
Feeling on top of the world en route to Murano!
Murano
Murano is famous for its colourful glass, and you will see beautiful delicate artefacts bursting with colour sprinkled all over the shops in Venice. These beautiful works of art are all made on the tiny island of Murano, which is a hop, skip and jump away from Venice. Wanting to see how these are made, I got chatting to our concierge about what I wanted to indulge in, and lo and behold, that was the key to unlocking a pretty fantastic experience! Our wonderful concierge organised a behind the scenes tour for us, which included a complimentary private water taxi that whisked us off to Murano to visit one of the oldest glass factories on the island. Here, we were introduced to a step by step process of the art of glass making and I have to say that it is quite fascinating to watch glass being blown and intricately moulded with beautiful colours incorporated, and turning into all these everyday pieces that we use right before our eyes!
We watched a jug being blown from scratch, which went on to form part of a set of glassware being produced for The Cippriani – one of Venice’s fanciest hotels. As if just watching wasn’t enough, wandering around the gallery and oogling at all these hand made pieces that are so breathtakingly beautiful was a brilliant experience! I fell in love with the colourful chandeliers, similar to the pieces on the grand foyer ceiling of the The Bellagio in Las Vegas. Had they not been so out of my price range, I would have picked up some for my own home! One day, perhaps! As if beautiful chandeliers weren’t enough, these glass craftsmen took the art of glass making one step further and created entire scenes and pieces entirely from glass! I had to tiptoe around the gallery lest Ms. Clumsy make an appearance, feeling like a kid in a candy shop whilst admiring beautiful motorbikes, aquariums, jewellery and an exhibit of woodland creatures!

Colourful Burano
I fell in love with Burano the instant we arrived! This is probably my favourite island after Venice. The rows of super colourful houses with their herb gardens and colourful flowers peeking out of window boxes that sit along the canal which separates its streets, with boats bobbing up and down, docked outside just made me sooo happy! Only a short hop away from Murano, I could spend ages ambling around the colourful little streets as life goes on, with bicycles propped against purple coloured doors. Cute old ladies make their lace and there are smells of delicious meals being cooked, as time ticks on and the people of Burano go about their everyday tasks oblivious to all the gawking. In between my camera clicks, my thoughts are that this is easily a place I could spend some time, or the rest of my life perhaps? Simply gorgeous.

-On getting to Murano
Your hotel concierge will probably have a connection with one of the many glass factories in Murano, so do chat with them and see what they would suggest. We had a free one way private water taxi ride to Murano.
-On getting to Burano
It is easier to go to Murano first (see WanderNugget above), then take the Vaporetto Line 12 to Burano. This line also goes back to Venice from Burano.
